EMERGENCY INFORMATION
The University Police Department hopes you never have a medical emergency. However, if you do, the following information is provided as a referance to the services available to you.

Some information you should know

  • Dial 9-1-1 in any emergency..
    • Dialing 9-1-1 on any campus phone connects you directly to University Police.
    • Dialing 9-1-1 on a cell phone connects you to the California Highway Patrol who will then transfer the call to a University Police Dispatcher.
    • "Blue Light" emergency phones, located throughout campus, also connect to University Police via the 9-1-1 system.

  • University Police Dispatchers are certified in the use of the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocol pursuant to standards set by the San Luis Obispo Emergency Medical Services Agency (EMSA). This means that if you are present at the medical emergency the dispatcher is trained to evaluate the patient's condition and offer the caller appropriate first aid instruction until the arrival of emergency personnel.

  • University Police Officers are certified in the use of First Aid and CPR (Professional Rescuer) pursuant to Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations.

  • University Police are certified in the use of Automatic External Defibillators (AED) pursuant to standards set by the EMSA in situations wherein cardiac arrest has occured.

  • Emergency Medical Technicians and/or Paramedics will also respond to care for the patient as well.
When you call us with a medical emergency

  • When you call our 9-1-1 communications center the dispatcher will ask:

    • - Where is the patient?
      • - Be prepared to offer special directions if necessary.

    • - What is the problem?

    • - Is the patient conscious?
      • - If the patient is unconscious, check for a "MedicAlert" bracelet which can provide emergency medical information.

    • - Can the patient provide any information about any special medical conditions?
      • - Epilepsy
      • - Heart condition
      • - Diabetes
      • - Etc.

  • The dispatcher will also be dispatching police, ambulance and fire at the same time. (Please be patient as we get help on the way.)

  • If someone is available, send them to a location where they can easily contact arriving emergency personnel and assist them to the patient's location.

  • Stay on the line until the dispatcher ends the call - we may need additional information.
