National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS)

What is NSLDS?

The National Student Loan Data System, or NSLDS, is the U.S. Department of Education's central database for federal student financial aid records. It provides disbursement records (date/amount) for federal grants and student loans. Additionally, it also provides student loan balances and lender contact information.

To access student loan information, log on to the system (as per instructions provided below). Click on the click here for loan information link. Each loan is assigned a number (blue box to the left of the loan type description). Click on the number to access lender contact information.

What is the NSLDS Student Access Web Site?

The NSLDS Student Access Web Site lets student borrowers track and manage their federal student loans and grants online. The site provides disbursement amounts, outstanding balances, and status per federal fund type.

How secure is the NSLDS site?

Very. The combination of Social Security number, assigned PIN, and other personal identifiers make it as secure as using an ATM.

How to access the information (Personal Identification Number: PIN)

You'll need a Personal Identification Number (PIN) to access the NSLDS Data System. Note: you were assigned a PIN during the FAFSA process (financial aid application process). You may use that PIN to access the NSLDS Data System.

If you need to request a duplicate - or new - PIN, please request one on line (link provided below). After you have successfully submitted a PIN request, the Department of Education will send you an email.

Click here to request a PIN

How to log on to the NSLDS Data System

  • You will need your assigned PIN to log on.

  • Log on to the NSLDS homepage.

  • Select the Financial Aid Review link.

  • Key in the requested personal identifying information.

  • If you need assistance accessing the NSLDS site, please contact the Student Aid Information Center: 1.800.4FED.AID.

If you are accessing the NSLDS Data System because you are getting ready to enter repayment, please read the following information carefully:

NSLDS will summarize all federal loans and/or grants disbursed to you. Only the Teach Grant program has a post-enrollment service requirement. Other grants summarized are for informational purposes only.

The NSLDS site does not summarize non-federal debt, such as:

  • Non-federal institutional (campus-based) loans
(Cal Poly is the lender for all the following loan types):
    • Collins
    • Lydia Humphrey
    • Long-Term Lutz
    • Nissen
    • Van Asperen
    • CFFA
    • Dugan
    • Camp
    • Noyce Teacher Scholarships and Stipend
    • ...And any other institutional loans lent through Cal Poly

  • Non-federal alternative student loans ( lent by a bank)

  • Unpaid Cal Poly student account debt

How to determine if you have non-federal debt

  • Private alternative student loans lent through a bank:

Contact the Financial Aid Office and inquire, or click here for a list of lender contacts.

  • Institutional loans lent through Cal Poly (includes Noyce Scholarships/Stipends):

Contact your Cal Poly Repayment Counselor and inquire (please include last 4 of ID#).

You may also email the Cal Poly billing service (ECSI) at CService@ECSI.net.

Your email to ECSI should include the following:

    • Student name (first and last) as it appears on the Cal Poly portal
    • The last 4 digits of your SS# (student loans are tracked by SS#, not EMPL ID#)
    • Your email question: Am I in the ECSI system as the borrower of a non-federal institutional loan? If so, please provide me with the name of the loan type(s).

  • Past due Cal Poly student account debt:

Access your STUDENT CENTER PAGE through the portal (review your holds carefully)

NOTE: students have access to the portal for 2 year after their last term at Cal Poly. Because miscellaneous items may be charged on a student account after the student has left, we strongly encourage all students leaving Cal Poly to review their STUDENT CENTER PAGE once or twice a month for at least 3 or 4 months (both the hold and financial sections available on the STUDENT CENTER PAGE (via the Money Matters tab).

Please Contact the Cal Poly Help Desk with any portal log in difficulties (M thru F, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM): 805.756.7000.
