Frequently
Asked Questions
1. How can you check to see if you have a parcel at the
Residence Hall Center when you haven’t received an e-mail
from the Residence Hall Package Center?
The following information should be presented to the Residence Hall
Package Center staff when inquiring about a parcel:
- The package tracking number.
- The date and time the parcel arrived and who signed for the
parcel at the university.
- What type of service it was sent by, such as UPS, Federal Express,
etc.
2. What if I don’t use my Cal Poly OpenMail account?
When you enter Cal Poly an OpenMail account is created for you
automatically. This account will be used throughout your career
at Cal Poly for all official communication from the University.
This is the account to which the parcel notification will be sent.
If you decide you want to read your mail at another account (e.g.,
AOL, Hotmail, etc.) you may have your Cal Poly OpenMail forwarded
to you. For instructions go to: http://servicedesk.calpoly.edu/my_cp_support/email_del_add_updates.html.
3. How will my student receive mail/packages in the Residence
Halls?
United States Postal Service (USPS) mail (i.e., letters, cards,
postcards, and packages excluding Express Mail) will be delivered
to your student’s Residence hall front desk and sorted into
your student’s mailbox (small, letter-sized boxes).
Packages (oversized envelopes and boxes) should be sent via a shipper
with a tracking number (i.e., UPS or FedEx). Requiring a signature
provides verification of the arrival of a package and provides valuable
information when attempting to locate packages. Although USPS provides
a variety of tracking options (i.e., Ceritfied, Delivery Confirmation,
Insured, and Registered), the only reliable option is Express Mail.
All other USPS tracking options other than Express Mail will be
treated as normal mail and can not be tracked by Distribution Services.
It is also strongly recommended that you insure any valuable items
being shipped.
Students who receive packages requiring a signature will receive
an e-mail from the Cal Poly Mail Center notifying them that a package
is being held at the Residence Hall Package
Center. To pick up their packages, residents must present a
photo ID and a copy of the e-mail notification.
4. How do I get my mail forwarded to me once I move off campus?
In order to have your mail forwarded to you once you move off campus you must contact every entity that sends you mail and inform them of your new address. The post office does not recognize "Official Mail Forwarding Change of Address Order" forms for students moving off campus. "Change of Address" cards are available at your dorm front desk, as well as, the Package Center and can be completed and mailed off to anyone who sends you mail.
Any mail received for students who have moved off campus will be automatically returned to whomever sent the mail. No exceptions.
5. How do I contact the package center?
Package center can be contacted either by e-mail at packagecenter@calpoly.edu, or by phone at (805) 756-6263.
