Sealing Mail
- All pre-stamped, outgoing, official mail should be sealed before
being picked up by the Distribution Services staff.
- Tabs are the preferred method to seal a letter mail piece that
does not use an envelope. In lieu of tabs, wafer seals or tape
may also be used. Clasps, staples, string, buttons, and similar
protrusions may not be used as methods of closing letter size
pieces since they can cause jams and damage to the mail during
transport. For similar reasons, the edges may not be notched,
scalloped, or curved. The sealed open edge must be the top of
the mail piece.
- When addressing manila clasp envelopes, the clasp should be
located on the right hand side as you look at the face of the
envelope. Manila envelopes should be sealed/clasped before being
sent to the Mail Center.
