Workers' Compensation / Industrial Disability Leave (IDL)

You are fully insured under Workers' Compensation law for any injury/illness arising out of or in the course of (AOE/COE) employment. Workers' Compensation is an employer paid benefit that provides you with medical, lost wage compensation, and vocational rehabilitation benefits (for injuries prior to 2004) if you are injured on tech job or become ill because of your work.

To protect your benefits, report all job-related injuries immediately to your supervisor. Your supervisor will provide you with the DWC Form 1 (Employee's Claim for Workers' Compensation Benefits) within one working day of reporting your injury/illness. If you wish to designate your personal physician as your treating physician for work-related injuries/illnesses, either contact the Workers' Compensation Claim's Coordinator in Risk Management for the Form 104-B or download the form here.

Non-Industrial Disability Insurance (NDI)

NDI provides benefits when you are disabled from work due to illness or injury that is not work related.

You are eligible for NDI if you are

1) a full-time permanent or probationary employee;

or

2) permanent part-time or hourly CSU employee who has permanent status with at least 6 months of compensated pay periods in the 18 months immediately preceding your disability;

or

3) appointed half-time or more for at least one year or one academic year.

Benefit payments begin after you have used all of your accrued sick leave (use of vacation is optional, but if you choose to use your vacation time, you must use all of it before NDI benefits begin).

Benefit payments are $125 per week for up to a maximum of 26 weeks of certified disability. Exceptions: Unit 1 (Physicians) benefit payments are $135 per week and effective 7/1/00, CSUEU member benefit payments are $250 per week.

Long Term Disability (LTD)

A long term disability plan is automatically provided to faculty (Unit 3), academic support employees (Unit 4), and to members of the Management Personnel Plan. LTD provides benefits after six months of continuous disability. Benefits include 66 2/3 percent of pay coordinated with other benefit plan payments up to age 65.

Other voluntary long-term disability plans are available to most employees through the CSU voluntary insurance program.

Disability Retirement

You may apply for disability retirement benefits if you become disabled and can not work. Five (5) years of credited service with the Public Employees' Retirement System is necessary.
