A Message from the Chief
To our community and visitors,
On behalf of the men and women of the University Police Department at Cal Poly, I am pleased to welcome you to our website.
Jurisdiction & Community
The California Polytechnic State University campus is located in the heart of the Central Coast just ten miles from the Pacific Ocean. In addition to the 1321 acre core campus area, nearby ranches and other Cal Poly property brings the primary jurisdiction of the University Police Department to over 10,000 acres. Overall, Cal Poly is the second largest land-holding university in California and among the largest land-holding universities in the United States.
The student population at Cal Poly is approximately 19,500. Faculty, staff, and administrators add an additional 2,600 to the overall daily community of approximately 22,000, and our on-campus residency is presently 6,500. Throughout the year, Cal Poly hosts hundreds of sporting, academic, business, professional, art, music and performing arts events, resulting in hundreds of thousands of visitors to the campus.
Motto and Mission
Our motto is "Protecting Our Future". The mission of the University Police Department at Cal Poly is to promote a safe and secure learning environment by maintaining order, enforcing laws, and providing professional police, emergency, parking, and access services.
Your Department and Mine
Cal Poly is one of 23 California State University campuses and the University Police Department is part of the Administration and Finance Division at the Cal Poly campus. There are 44 full-time members of the University Police Department. Speaking from experience with this and several other police agencies over the last 34 years, I am pleased and proud to say that the managers, staff and officers of this department are first-rate, highly competent professionals in whom I have the utmost confidence and respect. Because of our outstanding employees the University Police Department is well prepared to face the many challenges we encounter while carrying out our duties and providing service to the community.
The department also employs approximately 55 students throughout the academic year and summer months. Our student employees contribute greatly to the success of the department, and the training and experience they gain from employment with the University Police is intended to serve as an enhancement to their academic endeavors and responsibilities.
Together the nearly one hundred members of the University Police Department strive to meet the highest expectations of the community through quality service. Their efforts contribute to the lower crime rates and high level of safety the campus community enjoys. If you would like to learn more about any particular service provided by our department, please contact us.
